Getting started

ZenMerch is a Shopify product personalization app built for a fast, user-friendly product page experience. This guide gets you from install → live personalizer → first test order.

Before you start

  • Online Store 2.0 theme required (Theme Editor has App embeds).
  • Know which theme is Live: Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes. Enable ZenMerch on the same theme customers see.
  • Have a test product ready. If you plan to use tag-based targeting, add a simple tag like zenmerch to that product.

1) Install and open the app

  1. Install ZenMerch from the Shopify App Store (or your install link).
  2. In Shopify admin, open Apps → ZenMerch.
  3. Confirm the app is connected and you can access settings.

2) Enable theme integration (Online Store 2.0)

  1. In ZenMerch, go to Settings → Theme integration.
  2. Click Enable ZenMerch embed (opens Shopify Theme Editor).
  3. In Theme Editor: open App embeds (plug icon) → enable ZenMerch → click Save.
  4. Back in ZenMerch, click Refresh status to confirm the embed is enabled.
  5. Open any targeted product page to confirm the personalizer is showing (no manual app block placement required).

3) Create your first template (fields + layers)

  1. Go to Templates → New template.
  2. Add fields (text/options/uploads, etc.).
  3. In Layers, add visual layers and link them to your fields.
  4. Save the template.

4) Apply to products (targeting)

Choose one method:

  • Products: assign the template to selected products.
  • Rules: assign automatically via tags/title/vendor/type.

Shopify tip (tags): Shopify admin → Products → select a product → Tags → add tag (e.g. zenmerch) → Save.

Tip: use targeting rules when you manage many products.

5) Test on storefront

  1. Open a targeted product page.
  2. Confirm live preview updates instantly.
  3. Confirm validation/profanity filtering behaves as expected (if enabled).
  4. Test uploads (if used): preview renders correctly and limits behave as expected.
  5. Add to cart and place a test order.
